Fast Break: Pancake, A History
30,000 years ago the first pancake was born. Ground grains, mixed with water, and thrown on a hot stone by the fire was the ancestor to the breakfast dish we now know and love. Thank you, cave man, for the invention of the best breakfast food. Ever.
Since then the pancake has been on a long journey. Ancient Greeks and Romans sweetened their pancakes with honey and Elizabethans in the 1500’s spiced theirs up with apples, sherry, and rosewater. The French invented crepes and never looked back.
The version of pancakes that the United States has come to know and love took centuries to perfect. But once we did, we were totally addicted. George Washington is said to have dunked and soaked his pancakes in maple syrup before eating them. Might be the reason why he had all fake teeth…
Pancakes nowadays are special breakfast foods, saved for Saturday brunch or Sunday morning. Or, if you have guests over night, you pull out all the stops and make a veritable pancake spread: butter, maple syrup, blueberries, and bananas. Pancakes have even become a YouTube art form.
Sunny Street Café tips our hat to that caveman who invented the pancake tens of thousands of years ago. Without that invention, we wouldn’t have Pumpkin Spice Pancakes to devour today! Brunch just wouldn’t have been the same.
