Fast Break: Yogurt

Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day, but my standard go-to breakfast is yogurt and granola. The oats give me energy and yogurt balances me. It tastes fresh and it’s just what I love. And, lucky me, it’s healthy! Yogurt is packed full of probiotics, one of those words we hear all the time. Actually, probiotics is what makes yogurt, well, yogurt. But what really are they, and what can they do for our bodies?

Now, don’t get squeamish, but probiotics are live bacteria and yeast that help your digestive track work more efficiently. Yes, not all bacteria are bad for you- we actually rely on certain bacteria to digest all the delicious food we eat in a day. Eating foods rich in probiotics can help balance your body between the good, the bad, and the ugly.

This is especially good news during winter, when we all have the sniffles and are doing everything we can to stay healthy. Probiotics can help protect you against those nasty sniffles. Besides good bacteria, yogurt also packs in good healthy calories, vitamins, and calcium that help keep our bodies chugging along.
All this is good news, no? Start having yogurt a few times a week, to mix up your diet a little bit. Sunny Street Café has a great breakfast sundae for you to try out: fresh fruit topped with strawberry yogurt, granola, and raisins. A yogurt a day keeps the doctor away.
