Fast Break: Black Beans

Who doesn’t like a good legume? Ok, quite a few people, but let me try and convince you otherwise. Beans have sadly gotten a bad reputation over the years for being contributors to a not so pleasant function of the human body. But that’s a shame, because they’re incredibly healthy and nutritious for you! The American Cancer Society, American Diabetes Association, and the American Heart Association all say that eating more legumes can help overall health and prevent disease.

I could just drop the mic and rest my case here, but let me tell you a bit about why they can help your overall health. Vegetarian swear by black beans because they are an excellent source of protein- and this protein is much lower in cholesterol and saturated fats than meat is. Beans are also a good source of iron, which helps keep your energy up throughout the day.

Can’t get enough of this magic bean? Fast Break: Chili

Having some black beans is good for your bones and blood pressure, with high amounts of calcium and potassium packed into that tiny little bean. And of course, they are high in fiber, which is what gives them that bad reputation. But you know- fiber is really good for you. Not only does it help your digestive work at a higher function, it also helps blood sugar control, heart health, weight management, and skin health.
So don’t knock black beans just yet. Try them in our delicious breakfast quesadilla, or for lunch in our homemade chili! Just give them a chance. They might yet surprise you.
